Pico Iyer is explaining the greatness of all the punctuations but emphasizes more on the comma. "Punctuation marks are the road signs placed along the highway of our communication -- to control speeds, provide directions and prevent head-on collisions." I love the way he metaphorically phrases this because puncuation determines how we read and understand sentences and stories. Punctuation could be a matter of the attitude that you take from a text message or a letter or email. "the comma is a flashing yellow light that asks us only to slow down" This is a perfect description of the comma because a comma is a pause a simple gesture to slow down and smooth things out. A comma is like a rainy day in the summer. Its a break from the heat and the constant out doors to just slow down and relax. That was the interpretation I took from Pico Iyer when he explained the comma. "Punctuation, in short, gives us the human voice, and all the meanings that lie between the words." Iyer demonstrates the importance of puncuation very metaphorically but very descriptive to get it across just how he wants it to. I liked how he did it because it was easy to visualize and easily understood.
